In addition to applauding his efforts to expand health care and advance medical and scientific research, the resolution highlighted Durbin’s championing of legislation and initiatives that supported Lake County. More than $1 billion in federal grants have been awarded within the county since Fiscal Year 2008 (FY08) while Durbin has been in office. The end of the resolution read: “Be it recognized, that this County Board of Lake County, Illinois, and the people of Illinois are grateful for Senator Durbin’s integrity, leadership, and decades of dedicated public service; and be it further recognized, that the Lake County Board does hereby honor Senator Richard J. ‘Dick’ Durbin for his extraordinary service to the State of Illinois and the nation and extends our sincere gratitude and best wishes upon his retirement from the United States Senate.” Following the passage of the resolution, Durbin briefly reflected on his efforts to secure federal funding for Lake County infrastructure. “It has been a great opportunity to serve a lot of people—to do things that are good on a large scale for a great state like Illinois. We always work closely with the leaders in local government regardless of their party affiliation. It makes no difference the day after the election as far as I’m concerned,” Durbin said. “Thanks for this great honor and recognition. I’m glad to be part of an effective government unit. I still have five or six months at this job and I’m planning on running through the tape. So, I thank you all very much.” Photos from the event are available here . Text of the resolution is available here . Durbin has secured $1.08 billion in earmarks across the county during his Senate tenure. Durbin has been an outspoken advocate for Lake County’s Great Lakes Naval Station, and he has brought more than $900 million in federal investment to the station.
