Colorado Republicans: Bill to Legalize Prostitution Defeated

Denver, CO - March 11th, 2026 — Colorado Senate Republicans are hailing a victory in laying over SB26-097, the Decriminalize Adult Commercial Sexual Activity bill.
The bill, sponsored by several Democratic lawmakers, would take away criminal penalties for buying and selling sex and would make it harder for law enforcement to fight human trafficking and exploitation. Republican leaders and public-safety advocates say the proposal would move Colorado in the wrong direction.
“Colorado families do not want their state known as a hub for legalized prostitution,” stated Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, Republican Senator John Carson. “This proposal sends the message that the legislature is more focused on radical social experiments than protecting communities, combating human trafficking, and supporting victims.”
Critics warn that the bill could lead to unexpected public safety problems and undermine local control by preventing cities and counties from enforcing their own rules. Colorado already has serious problems with crime, public safety, and trafficking. Republicans will focus on protecting vulnerable people instead of expanding the commercial sex industry.
