Fedorchak votes to strengthen grid reliability, prevent premature power plant closures

December 16, 2025 Press Release Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) today voted in support of legislation to strengthen long-term electric grid reliability and prevent federal policies from undermining dependable power generation. H.R. 3632, the Power Plant Reliability Act , gives states and grid operators tools to prevent premature power plant closures and requires advance notice of retirements. “Our grid depends on having reliable, dispatchable generation that can meet peak demand. But throughout the country, power providers are being forced to shut down massive amounts of always-available power faster than they’re able to replace it,” Fedorchak said. “This bill strengthens reliability planning and empowers states to support a grid Americans can count on.” Image H.R. 3632 enhances section 207 of the Federal Power Act to allow states and grid operators to contest the closure of a power plant retirement if the closure jeopardizes electric reliability. It also requires power plants to provide a 5-year advance notice of their plans to retire, while providing exemption waivers under FERC approval. Earlier this year, Fedorchak introduced the Baseload Reliability Protection Act , legislation that builds on H.R. 3632 to prohibit the retirement of critical baseload generators in regions identified as being at elevated or high risk of electricity shortfalls.
