Resources / Press Share on RELEASE: House Intelligence Committee Approves 2027 Funding Bill, Gottheimer Amendment Orders New Report on Iran Threat Will Assess Iran's Nuclear, Drones, and Missile Programs, Terror Proxies, and the Strait of Hormuz Jul 21, 2026 Press WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, July 20, 2026, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) advanced the Fiscal Year 2027 Intelligence Authorization Act (IAA). It included an amendment led by Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) that will require the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to produce a National Intelligence Estimate assessing the threat posed by the Islamic Republic of Iran now and over the next five years. “After almost five months since this conflict began, the tireless efforts of our troops, and American lives lost, it is critical that we understand where things stand today and what the intelligence community thinks will happen next,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) . “My amendment would require the DNI to prepare, and submit to the congressional intelligence committees, a National Intelligence Estimate assessing the threat posed by Iran over the next five years. It’s vitally important for us to get the intelligence community’s objective assessment of where things stand.” The Intelligence Authorization Act authorizes funding for intelligence activities and strengthens congressional oversight of the Intelligence Community. This year’s IAA expands our AI capabilities, ensures our Intelligence Community has the tools to fight terror, and protects our defense personnel and sensitive information from our adversaries. Gottheimer’s amendment, now included in the bill advanced by the committee, will direct the DNI to submit the estimate to the congressional intelligence committees within 180 days of enactment, assessing: 1) The threat Iran poses to the United States and its interests, partners, and allies; 2) The stability of the Iranian regime; the status of Iran’s nuclear and advanced conventional weapons programs, including its ballistic missiles and drones; 3) The status of Iran’s regional proxies, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad; 4) And, the status of the Strait of Hormuz. The amendment also requires the estimate to include an unclassified summary. Next, the bill will go to the floor for full House consideration. ### Share on
