BANGOR, ME –Today, U.S. Senator Susan Collins visited the Thomas A. Hill House, where Bangor Historical Society President Risteen Bahr, Curator and Operations Manager Matt Bishop, and members of the board led her on a tour of the museum and provided an update on the building’s portico restoration. The Hill House museum is home to both a Stone and a Tyler engraving of the Declaration of Independence — two rare 19th-century reproductions of the original document — that the Bangor Historical Society will showcase in celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary this year.
Senator Collins, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee,secured$100,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending in Fiscal Year 2024 to support the rehabilitation of the Hill House museum, which also serves the headquarters for the Bangor Historical Society.
“The Thomas A. Hill House is an important part of Bangor’s history and is home to remarkable pieces from our nation’s past,”said Senator Collins.“I worked hard to secure federal funding to support the restoration of this historic building so that it can continue to house artifacts that tell the story of Bangor, our state, and our nation for years to come.”
Since Congress reinstituted Congressionally Directed Spending in 2021, Senator Collins hassecurednearly $1.5 billion to support 670 local projects throughout the State of Maine.
