One Year of Delivering for Working Families

Image July 11, 2026 e-Newsletter Archive One Year of Delivering for Working Families Last week, we celebrated the one-year anniversary of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act — the Working Families Tax Cuts —which were signed into law by President Trump in a historic ceremony at the White House. Since then, the Working Families Tax Cuts have delivered real results for Michigan families, workers, farmers, and small businesses . Its successful provisions have provided more jobs, lower taxes, and bigger paychecks to working families. As a result, this year was the largest tax refund season in history, with 97% of filers receiving a tax cut . The average refund this filing season was 11% higher than the year before, with Michigan families seeing a tax cut of about $3,131. Nearly 70% of filers receiving a tax cut earned less than $100,000 , providing real relief to everyday Americans. Supporting Families and Seniors This year, hardworking Michigan families paid less and were offered real relief thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts. This pro-family legislation prevented residents of Michigan’s 5th Congressional District from seeing a 27% tax hike . It also implemented key policies to put more money back in the pockets of hardworking parents, strengthen families, and help build a brighter future for the next generation, including: Increasing the Standard Deduction Doubling the Child Tax Credit Establishing newborn savings accounts with $1,000 invested Incentivizing employers to increase paid family leave for workers Increasing the Adoption Tax Credit Due to the pro-family provisions in the legislation, a family of four with two kids earning $73,000 and claiming the standard deduction and Child Tax Credit owed zero in income tax liability this year. 35 million seniors also benefited from no tax on Social Security, with an average deduction of over $7,500. This amounts to the largest tax break in history for our nation's seniors, providing real relief to those who have worked a lifetime. Empowering Workers and Small Businesses You earned it, and you deserve to keep it. The Working Families Tax Cuts legislation delivers on this promise by increasing take-home pay and allowing hardworking Americans to pocket more of their hard-earned money. Key policies like no tax on tips and overtime have also helped over 7.5 million tipped workers and over 29 million hourly employees working overtime take an extra $1,300 and $1,400 a year home to their families , respectively. It also created more opportunities for Michiganders through provisions that allow for business expansion, creating more good-paying jobs and growing our economy. By making the 20% small business deduction from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent, small businesses will create 1 million new jobs and $75 billion in economic growth every year. The legislation also included full expensing for research and development initiatives, equipment, and upgrades to manufacturing plants, allowing small business owners to further invest in their companies. Helping Students As Chair of the Education and Workforce Committee, I helped usher through the Student Success and Taxpayers Savings Act, which was part of the final legislation. This plan represents one of the most significant higher education reforms in decades and has already saved taxpayers an estimated $284 billion while helping ensure federal education dollars are spent responsibly and effectively. It also includes reforms to lower costs for students and families by holding colleges accountable for results, putting students first with responsible loan limits, simplifying repayment and supporting borrowers, and expanding pathways through Pell Grants. Revolutionizing Our National Security The Working Families Tax Cuts have also helped us to strengthen our national security. The legislation helped to end the border crisis caused by the previous administration by making the largest border security investment in history . It funded the construction of the border wall to prevent illegal border crossings and deadly fentanyl from flowing into our communities. The Working Families Tax Cuts legislation also protects our communities by ensuring our country’s weaponry and defense systems are modernized to protect our homeland against 21st-century threats. This bill is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revolutionize our nation’s defense capabilities with historic investments in cutting-edge technologies and ensure our military is equipped to protect our country against any threats. Unleashing American Energy Dominance The Working Families Tax Cuts legislation included many provisions to unleash American energy production so that we can unlock our full energy potential and bring down costs for American families. The bill increases onshore and offshore oil and gas leases to provide certainty for energy producers, spur job growth, and make energy more affordable for American consumers. The bill also increases the mining of domestic minerals and makes America less dependent on foreign adversaries for critical minerals.
