Baldwin Forces Vote to Redirect $14 Billion in Excessive ICE Funding Towards Lowering Childcare Costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) forced the Senate to vote to redirect billions in federal funding from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to instead invest in lowering the cost of childcare for American families. Senate Republicans voted down the measure. As the Senate debated Republicans' bill to give $75 billion to ICE and Border Patrol, Baldwin forced the Senate to vote on her amendment to redirect $14.27 billion to invest in childcare. Specifically, Senator Baldwin’s amendment would transfer that $14.27 billion to the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) Program, which helps working families access quality and affordable childcare. Baldwin’s amendment comes after ICE killed two Americans and continues to terrorize communities. Two-thirds of Americans say ICE and Border Patrol have gone “too far” with their tactics. A Marquette Law School poll found 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of the job ICE is doing, while 3 in 4 Americans support making changes at ICE. Full text of the amendment is available here .
