In New Video, Shaheen Underscores Nationwide Impact of INSULIN Act, Highlights That Most States Do Not Cap Monthly Insulin Costs at $35
(Washington, DC) – U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Co-Chair of the U.S. Senate Diabetes Caucus , today released a new video highlighting the importance of passing her INSULIN Act and revealing that 27 states currently do not have a $35 cap on monthly insulin costs. Shaheen then underscores that passage of her bill is a step Congress could take to immediately lower health care costs and protect Americans, regardless of the state they live in, from being forced to pay thousands of dollars a year for their life-saving insulin. Key Quotes from Senator Shaheen: “In the richest nation on Earth, no American should have to choose between affording groceries for their families or the insulin they need to survive. Unfortunately, as I’ve heard from too many students, families and health care providers […] this is happening every day.” “While some states have already taken steps to cap insulin costs at $35 or less, most haven’t. That means Americans in states such as South Dakota, Wyoming and Pennsylvania could be forced to pay thousands of dollars a year for the insulin they need to stay alive.” “Diabetes is a condition that touches the lives of so many Americans across the country, and the state you live in shouldn’t determine whether you can afford your life-saving insulin.” Shaheen’s bipartisan Improving Needed Safeguards for Users of Lifesaving Insulin Now (INSULIN) Act would cap monthly out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35 a month for Americans with insurance, expanding the effective price cap for Americans on Medicare. Shaheen has championed efforts to lower insulin costs throughout her time in office, and the bill is closer than ever before to passing out of the U.S. Senate. In July, the INSULIN Act advanced out of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee , and in September companion legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives . Shaheen’s newest video comes as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle continue to point to the INSULIN Act as an immediate step Congress can take to lower costs for millions. Senator Shaheen has worked tirelessly to lower health care costs for Granite Staters and Americans. As co-chair of the U.S. Senate Diabetes Caucus, Senator Shaheen has consistently pressed to hold insulin manufacturers, insurers and pharmacy benefit managers accountable for the skyrocketing cost of life-saving insulin and otherwise support patients and families facing diabetes. Polling released from the American Diabetes Association this summer found that 40% of respondents who rely on insulin report paying more than $150 per month for insulin, and 76% of respondents across political parties support a $35 limit on cost sharing for insulin. ###
