In Las Cruces, Luján Holds Outreach Event to Raise Awareness About Expanded Compensation Available Through RECA

Las Cruces, N.M.– This week, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) held a public outreach forum to raise awareness about expanded compensation available through the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA). During the forum, Senator Luján facilitated multiple presentations by experts and advocates on how to apply for compensation through the Department of Justice (DOJ) and provided information about resources available to aid applicants.
“For decades, New Mexico families carried the burden of our nation’s nuclear legacy with no acknowledgment or support,”said Senator Luján. “After decades of advocacy by survivors and their families, last year, Congress enacted my legislation to expand the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act. Now, we must work to ensure people receive the compensation they deserve. I’m grateful for the experts and advocates who took time to walk applicants through the RECA application process and help deliver real relief for the people who earned it.”
More information regarding RECA eligibility and the application process can be foundhere. Video of the information session can be foundhere.
Since being elected to Congress, Senator Luján has played a leading role in advancing legislation to strengthen the RECA program, introducing RECA legislation in every Congress and twice passing it through the Senate.
In January, Senator Lujánannouncedthat DOJ launched anew online portalfor RECA claims. In September, Senator Luján and the New Mexico Delegation sent anopen letterto New Mexico’s holders of health care records, birth and death records, tax records, school records and any other necessary records to request their full cooperation in delivering long overdue justice for New Mexicans exposed to radiation. Senator Luján announced in August that hesecured clear guidanceto provide claimants the instructions they need to apply for and receive compensation through RECA.
