Reed Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Resolution to Halt Trump’s Reckless Iran War

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked a resolution directing President Trump to halt hostilities with Iran unless they are approved by Congress by a narrow vote of 49-50. After casting his 13 th vote against the Iran war, Senator Reed stated: “President Trump and Secretary Hegseth were wrong from the get go. Their failures and weakness are why munitions are low and prices are high. They have botched this every step of the way and have no strategy to turn things around. Instead of wisely ending this war, they are simply escalating it, prolonging it, and wasting money and munitions while putting Americans at risk and forcing taxpayers to pay a bigger bill. Meanwhile, they continue to mislead the American people about the true cost of the war – which is costing Americans tens of billions per month. They have failed to achieve any of the objectives they used as a pre-text for the war and this conflict is not making America safer. “Republicans need to start listening to the people they represent and vote with Democrats to end this disastrous war. President Trump does not have a plan. Instead of doing their jobs and providing real oversight, Senate Republican leaders are making things worse by shielding him from accountability.”
