BREAKING: Rep. Luna Urges DHS Secy. Noem to Delay REAL ID Implementation

<p>WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna sent a letter urging Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem to delay the deadline for Americans to receive a &#8220;Real ID.&#8221; Upon reaching the current deadline, May 7, millions of Americans without a Real ID, passport, or other accepted form of identity will be unable to board even domestic flights.</p>

<p>“Real ID, though good in theory, brings serious privacy concerns,&#8221; said Representative Luna. “I am asking for a pause on implementation to ensure that all privacy concerns can be addressed. This was a lapse in responsibility of previous Congresses and should have been addressed when the Real ID Act was passed almost two decades ago.&#8221;</p>

<p>The REAL ID Act was enacted in 2005 by the recommendation of the Congressional 9/11 Commission. The law expanded security around state-issued identification cards by establishing federal standards for issuance and verification. The implementation date has been shifted forward more than half a dozen times from its original 2008 deadline owing to a lack of state implementation and too few Americans possessing a Real ID.</p>
