Lawler Introduces Legislation to Strengthen Accountability for Public Housing Inspections

Washington, D.C. – 2/27/26… This week, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17) introduced the Annual Public Housing Inspections Accountability Act , legislation that requires the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Comptroller General to study public housing inspections and determine how many inspectors are needed to complete them each year. The bill directs HUD and the Comptroller General to determine how many required public housing inspections go unfinished each year and identify the number of inspectors needed to ensure all inspections are completed annually. “The American people deserve safe, well-maintained public housing. We don’t have a clear picture of how many required inspections are going unfinished or whether HUD has the personnel in place to get the job done. This bill brings transparency to the process and helps ensure residents aren’t left living in unsafe conditions,” said Congressman Lawler. Full text of the bill can be found HERE . Congressman Lawler is one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and represents New York's 17th Congressional District, which is just north of New York City and contains all or parts of Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, and Westchester Counties. He was rated the most effective freshman lawmaker in the 118th Congress, 8th overall, surpassing dozens of committee chairs. ###
