Washington, D.C. –Today, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) announced a meeting with Secretary of Education Linda McMahon on June 10, 2025. In addition to the meeting announcement, Senator Warren sent Secretary McMahon a letter containing 66 questions she would like McMahon to address about her tenure in advance of the meeting.
Last month, Senator Warren invited Secretary McMahon to a public forum Warren held on May 14, 2025, on higher education affordability. Secretary McMahon refused the invitation in a May 12 letter and instead requested a meeting with Senator Warren, which has been scheduled for June 10, 2025.
In advance of the meeting, Senator Warren rebutted eight false or misleading statements made in Secretary McMahon’s May 12 letter and requested additional information to better understand how her efforts to dismantle the Department of Education are affecting the American people.
“As the witnesses at my forum highlighted, this is not about politics—it is about putting the needs of working- and middle-class families trying to afford postsecondary education above the interests of billionaires,”said Senator Warren.
Secretary McMahon’s May 12 letter severely downplayed the destructive impacts of her policies on students, families, and borrowers. Senator Warren’s response described how — contrary to Secretary McMahon’s claims — McMahon’s efforts to dismantle the Department of Education are already raising costs for American families, making the federal student aid system far less efficient, and preventing the Department from cracking down on contractors and for-profit colleges that misuse federal funding while exploiting students and borrowers.
To inform their upcoming meeting, Senator Warren asked Secretary McMahon about the Department of Education’s activities across a range of areas, including:
“Instead of continuing to avoid accountability for your policies, I urge you to listen to the voices of students, borrowers, and families around the country and stop giving DOGE and Donald Trump a blank check to destroy American public education,”wrote Senator Warren.
Senator Warren launched theSave Our Schoolscampaign in a coordinated effort to fight back against President Trump’s attempts to abolish the Department of Education:
