At a Senate Judiciary Committee and briefing with national media, Senator Moody defended female athletes and pushed for fairness, opportunity, and safety in women’s sports. “Male athletes have no business competing in women’s sports, and it’s mindboggling that in 2026 we must pass legislation to protect meaningful opportunity for girls to compete. I am excited to join the many female athletes here today calling for fair competition and a real opportunity to excel in the sports they love,” said Senator Ashley Moody. BACKGROUND: Senator Moody joined female athletes to emphasis the importance of protecting women and girls in sports following a Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing today titled “Standing Up for Women in Sports: Ensuring Opportunity, Fairness and Safety for Female Athletes. As Florida’s Attorney General, Senator Moody led a multistate challenge to the Biden administration’s 2024 Title IX regulation changes, arguing that the changes undermined protections for women and girls. In 2021, Florida enacted the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, legislation that restricts individuals assigned male at birth from participating in sports teams or competitions designated for women or girls. Senator Moody is a cosponsor for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025 , that would generally prohibit school athletic programs from allowing individuals whose biological sex at birth was male to participate in programs that are for women and girls. Senator Moody also cosponsored the Title IX Clarification Act of 2026 , which would expressly define sex under Title IX as biological sex, either male or female, and make clear that gender identity does not change that classification.
