WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a co-sponsor of the Protect College Sports Act , spoke in support of the bill at a press conference on Capitol Hill. The Protect College Sports Act would establish national standards governing NIL, transfers, eligibility, and enforcement. Senator Capito’s remarks as prepared: “Today, we are here to talk about the importance of the Protect College Sports Act and reigning in the wild, wild west that college athletics have become. “One of the areas of this bill that I have been able to get involved with is: the preservation of women’s and Olympics sports. “While much of the emphasis with NIL has been placed on sports like football, and we have all seen the chaos there, we must also make sure that women’s and Olympic sports are protected. “Title IX exists. “Equal opportunity for women is an incredibly important aspect. “I’ve seen firsthand through my interactions with West Virginia schools the support they give to these programs and their student-athletes. “As a former college athlete myself and as a mother of a former female college athlete, I know this personally. “These sports teach leadership development, discipline, and perseverance. “All traits that prepare you for life after college athletics. “This bill will ensure that we are maintaining the level we are at now, and that if push comes to shove, women’s and Olympic sports stay protected. “I have been in constant contact with West Virginia athletes, coaches, administrators. West Virginia universities overwhelmingly support this bill. “I applaud Chairman Cruz and Ranking Member Cantwell for their leadership on this bill and I am confident that we can get this effort across the finish line.” # # #
