Peters Slams Unserious Republican DHS Bill

March 26, 2026 Washington, D.C. — Today, Representative Scott Peters (CA-50) released the following statement after House Republicans passed their partisan Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding bill to allocate an additional $28.8 billion for immigration enforcement. “Today’s DHS funding bill is the same partisan bill the House voted on in January. Bringing it back to the floor after it failed in the Senate is a waste of time. Senate negotiations on ICE are ongoing. If Speaker Johnson wanted to put pressure on those negotiations, he could have offered a diplomatic House compromise or another alternative. This accomplished nothing.” “We could also consider the discharge petition I signed, led by Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rep. Rosa DeLauro, that would fund all of DHS, except ICE and CBP. This solution is supported by over 200 Democrats. Yet, Speaker Johnson is choosing to ignore Democrats—despite our bipartisan efforts to reopen DHS. “We must stop using vital DHS employees as leverage. We need to get back to negotiating in good faith to reopen DHS and pay the people who keep this country running.” ###
