Fedorchak votes for long-term crime reform in D.C.

September 17, 2025 Press Release Fedorchak votes for long-term crime reform in D.C. Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak (R-ND) released the following statement after voting in favor of a series of public safety bills aimed at cracking down on violent crime in the nation’s capital. “In November, the American people overwhelmingly rejected crime and chaos in support of safety and security,” Fedorchak said. “Along with President Trump’s leadership to restore law and order in our nation's capital, the House's actions this week should serve as a blueprint for other crime-ridden cities to restore accountability and support law enforcement.” H.R. 4922, the D.C. CRIMES Act of 2025 , prevents the D.C. Council from weakening criminal sentences, reduces D.C.’s definition of a “youth” offender from 24 to 18 years of age, and requires the Office of the D.C. Attorney General to establish a public website reporting monthly juvenile crime statistics. H.R. 5140 lowers the age at which juveniles can be tried as adults in D.C. for certain violent offenses—such as murder, first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree burglary, and armed robbery—from 16 to 14 years old. H.R. 5143, the District of Columbia Policing Protection Act of 2025 , reverses restrictions on police pursuits by amending D.C.’s Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022 to allow officers to pursue fleeing suspects in vehicles when necessary to protect public safety. H.R. 5125, the District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Reform Act of 2025 , strengthens oversight of judicial nominations in Washington, D.C. by repealing the D.C. Judicial Nomination Commission and allowing the President to nominate D.C. judges directly, subject to Senate confirmation under the standard federal process.
