How is America Holding Up the Separation of Powers?

June 4, 2026 Blog Post Edmund Burke, often considered the Father of conservatism, once stated that to love one’s country, it ought to be lovely. From the purple mountains of Colorado and Tennessee to the amber waves of America’s heartland, few would deny that geographically, the United States is a beautiful nation. Yet the things that really make America exceptional are the principles on which we were founded. Almost 250 years ago, our Founding Fathers pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor not only to declare independence, but also to declare for all time that rights come from God, not government. Until this “Great Experiment,” a nation had never yet been founded on the idea of freedom and self-government. Therefore, it is still up to us to demonstrate to the world that government by “freedom and choice” is not only possible, but preferable. The Founding Fathers believed that the separation of powers is integral to free or limited government. They believed that all the power in one hand or one group of hands led to tyranny. That’s why they determined to create a government with three branches that shared powers. It is also why they decided to create a bicameral legislature and ensure that states could continue governing themselves under a system of federalism. Historically, the one thing that has always led to tyranny is centralized power. With the technology of the 21st century, the ability of a government to truly control its populace has never been greater, which is why we must be even more vigilant in safeguarding our freedoms. One of the best ways to do that is to keep power separated. Take my America250 Surveys Take the Separation of Powers survey here . Take the freedom survey here .
