Landsman Led the Charge in Passing the Social Security Fairness Act, Public Retirees Finally Receiving What They’re Owed

Cincinnati, OH – Today, Congressman Greg Landsman (D-OH-01) released the following statement on the U.S. Social Security Administration’s announcement that it will begin depositing adjusted payments to more than three million public retirees as a result of the Social Security Fairness Act being signed into law.

For more than 40 years, two provisions in the Social Security law unfairly penalized public retirees – such as teachers, nurses, and police officers – who contributed to both public pensions and Social Security.

Congressman Landsman played a leading role in repealing these unfair provisions by helping to pass the Social Security Fairness Act in late 2024. He helped lead the discharge petition effort – a rare congressional procedure used in Congress to force a vote on the bill. The petition quickly got the support it needed in the House and was later passed by the Senate. President Biden signed the bill in to law early 2025.

The Social Security Administration announced public retirees will begin seeing payment changes as early as this week, and full monthly benefit changes will be in effect with April’s Social Security payment. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that monthly benefits for public retirees will increase by $360 to $1,190, depending on retirees’ individual circumstances.

Congressman Landsman:

“We fought hard to pass the Social Security Fairness Act, and our public retirees will finally start to see the benefits they’re owed each month. Grassroots advocacy truly made this happen, and we hope it can help restore some faith in our government. We can’t thank everyone enough who called, emailed, and wrote in – it made a difference.”
