Baumgartner Introduces Resolution to Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons

WASHINGTON- Congressman Michael Baumgartner (WA-05), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced H.Res 398 on May 8, 2025, declaring it the policy of the United States to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The resolution emphasizes the necessity of fully dismantling Iran’s nuclear weapons program, strengthening deterrence, and establishing Congressional oversight. “Deterrence against Iran’s nuclear ambitions requires leveraging our regional partnerships and affirming Congress’s critical oversight role, especially regarding the authorization of force ,” said Congressman Baumgartner. “This resolution sets a firm strategic foundation for America’s enduring leadership and security commitments in the Middle East.” This week, President Trump is embarking on a critical visit to the Middle East, a region marked by both significant opportunities and substantial risks. As the U.S. seeks to strengthen its partnerships throughout the Gulf, it is essential to recognize that American leadership must be built on sustained, strategic engagement, not isolated agreements or unrealistic expectations of sweeping deals.
