Hoyer Statement on May Jobs Report
June 5, 2026 Press Release WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement on the May jobs report: “Although last month saw modest job growth – with some 172,000 jobs added and the unemployment rate remaining at 4.3% – we ought to look at the facts. Since President Trump took office in January 2025, the unemployment rate has increased, manufacturing jobs are down, and inflation is up. Additionally, the number of Americans struggling with long-term unemployment has gone up by 524,000 over the past year. These figures hardly put to rest the economic uncertainty that Americans have been feeling over these last 18 months. “Families remain concerned about the cost of living, businesses continue to navigate headwinds from tariffs and higher fuel prices, and Trump’s war of choice in Iran is having real consequences for communities in Maryland’s Fifth District and across the country. “The President and Congress should be focused on promoting economic growth, investing in American competitiveness, and creating opportunities for workers and their families to get ahead. Instead of working with Democrats to bring costs down, Trump and Congressional Republicans continue to send Americans the message that ‘You’re On Your Own,’ shifting critical resources toward Trump's vanity projects and his efforts to terrorize immigrant communities. “America’s workers and their families deserve economic policies from their government that put their success first – not put the President, his family and billionaire friends first. Congress must help ensure that we can sustain economic growth that is robust, long-lasting, and benefits our workers and their families.” Issues : Jobs & the Economy
