Moskowitz Demands Administration Keep Social Security Field Offices Open

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Jared Moskowitz (D-FL-23) joined 125 colleagues calling on the Trump Administration to protect Social Security field offices across the country.

In their letter to Acting Social Security Administrator Leland Dudek, the lawmakers pressed officials to commit to keeping open all Social Security field offices and, if they intend to close any, to identify which may be shut down and why. It comes amidst reports that Elon Musk’s DOGE is looking to cancel field office leases and close offices across the country.

Approximately 170,000 people visit Social Security field offices each day for assistance, including at more than fifty such locations in Florida. Closing any of these, the group says, will make it harder for Social Security beneficiaries to access their benefits.

“Eliminating Social Security field offices threatens to undermine seniors’ access to the Social Security benefits they earned. That’s unacceptable,” said Congressman Moskowitz. “With thousands of Florida seniors relying on these offices for assistance, we should be building them up, not tearing them down.”

Earlier this Congress, Moskowitz successfully pushed the Trump Administration to back off attempts to cut the Social Security phone line. In fiscal year 2024, the Social Security Administration received nearly 80 million calls to this 1-800 number, which seniors and individuals living with disabilities depend on for help with claims processing, direct deposit transactions, updates to personal information, and more. After pressure from Moskowitz and his colleagues, Elon Musk’s DOGE stepped back from their efforts to undermine this resource.

More than 7 million seniors receive at least 90 percent of their income from Social Security, and nearly 160,000 Floridians depend on Social Security in Florida’s 23rd Congressional district.
