Fetterman Tours City of Washington’s Flood Prone Areas
November 6, 2026 Fetterman Tours City of Washington’s Flood Prone Areas WASHINGTON, PA – Today, U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) visited the City of Washington to tour flood prone areas due to the Chartiers Creek and met with JoJo Burgess, Mayor of Washington, Demond Nixon, Mayor of East Washington, and other city officials. The group discussed further action and how the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ resource opportunities can help the City. “I’m proud to stand by the City of Washington and the Borough of East Washington so that we can find solutions to address the flooding from Chartiers Creek. We need to use every lever of the federal government to protect people and property as flooding continues to impact the area,” said Senator Fetterman. “I applaud this joint effort and look forward to working together to turn the conclusions of this study into a reality on the ground.” The City of Washington has dealt with flooding from the Chartiers Creek for decades and each year becoming more drastic. The US Army Corps of Engineers flood study will focus on the entirety of the Chartiers Creek watershed which runs through Washington and Allegheny Counties to the Ohio River. The study is 100% federally funded and is expected to be completed in 2028, with additional project funding to be approved by Congress. Senator Fetterman has identified resources for the City of Washington, including funding from the Army Corps and FEMA.
