Lawmakers Call for Ukrainian Temporaray Protected Status (Tps) Extension

October 20, 2026 LAWMAKERS CALL FOR UKRAINIAN TEMPORARAY PROTECTED STATUS (TPS) EXTENSION WASHINGTON, D.C. — This week, Rep. Val Hoyle (D-OR) and Rep. Bryan Fitzpatrick (R-PA) led over 50 of their colleagues in sending a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin demanding the agency ensure that Ukrainian nationals legally in the United States, particularly those with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), are able to safely access and attend their immigration court hearings, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) interviews and other required legal appointments. This push comes as DHS recently announced that over 100,000 of Ukrainians whose TPS benefits were slated to expire on October 19th, will retain their TPS protections and work permits until the Department makes a final decision. While this announcement provides much needed relief for TPS holders, the lack of a formal redesignation and extension could potentially exclude individuals who fled the same war and cause confusion and stress for people already facing uncertainty about their future, impacting their ability to keep work. Without any safe and durable path for Ukrainians to return home, these protections must be kept in place. The lawmakers wrote: “A redesignation would extend eligibility to Ukrainians who arrived in the United States after the current designation's cutoff date, but who fled the same war under the same circumstances and would give affected individuals clarity regardingtheir status. Those who came to our shores fleeing violence and instability deserve the opportunity to rebuild their lives and go through our country’s legal processes.” The lawmakers concluded their letter with the following demands: Provide full due process for any Ukrainian TPS holders attending immigration court hearings, USCIS interviews and other required legal appointments Provide information about Ukrainian nationals in ICE custody, the circumstances of their arrest and the status of their pending immigration cases to allow for appropriate oversight The full text of the letter is available here .
