Rep. Moore Applauds Reciprocal Tariffs Announcement from President Trump

February 13, 2025 Press Release Washington, D.C. – Congressman Riley M. Moore released the following statement after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to develop a comprehensive strategy on implementing reciprocal tariffs on foreign countries: “Since his first term, President Trump recognized how American exporters are getting ripped off by foreign countries – chiefly via excessive tariff and non-tariff trade barriers that many nations have in place on American goods,” said Congressman Moore. “These barriers make access to foreign markets quite difficult, and sometimes outright impossible. I’m proud to be leading the effort in Congress on reciprocal tariffs, because President Trump needs every tool at his disposal in these complex, dynamic negotiations. By using reciprocal tariffs, we can ultimately reduce these barriers to foreign markets, boost demand for American products across the globe, and increase free and fair trade.” Background: In late January, Congressman Moore introduced the U.S. Reciprocal Trade Act , which increases the President’s power to address foreign tariff and non-tariff trade barriers on U.S. exports. Under the legislation, the Executive can rapidly impose tariffs on foreign countries’ goods should they be unwilling to reduce their own duties and barriers. This legislation will give the United States a leg up in these complex, dynamic, and rapidly evolving negotiations, because national emergency declarations or lengthy investigations would no longer be required in these specific instances.
