WASHINGTON –
Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper underlined the need
for broad reforms
for Immigration and Customs Enforcement during a Senate forum featuring testimony from five witnesses including three Americans who experienced violence at the hands of DHS agents, the lawyer for Renee Good’s family, and an expert on public safety and policing.
“
Transparency and accountability are fundamental to every form of law enforcement,”
said Hickenlooper.
“And yet we’ve witnessed more and more masked agents operating in unmarked vehicles, creating fear and confusion in people all over this country.”
During the hearing, Senator Hickenlooper asked Martin Daniel Rascon and Aliya Rahman, both survivors of ICE violence, if ICE officers had identified themselves before attacking them. Both said ICE refused to provide basic identification. Hickenlooper has repeatedly called on ICE officers to remove their masks and show ID during arrests, and
leads a bill
that would make that identification requirement law.
Hickenlooper has consistently pushed for more
oversight
and
transparency
for federal immigration enforcement efforts, and has worked to help families desperately searching for loved ones arrested by ICE. Last week, Hickenlooper
spoke
on the Senate floor to denounce the horrifying killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good and to demand ICE reforms. He’s
shown
up
at ICE facilities to conduct
congressional oversight visits
and raise concerns about ICE disregarding due process. He helped
launch
an investigation into ICE’s unlawful obstruction of congressional oversight and introduced bills to
ban
ICE from wearing masks,
prevent
immigration enforcement from targeting schools, hospitals and places of worship, and cut back the excessive funding that MAGA Republicans gave them.
