Grassley Welcomes Trump Administration Actions to Support American Beef Producers

BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA – U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), a lifelong family farmer and member of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, welcomed new actions from the Trump administration to stand with family farmers and deliver relief to beef producers across Rural America. The executive orders signed by President Trump today build on longstanding Grassley priorities, including robust enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act , more options for shipping inspected meat across state lines and a renewed focus on mandatory country-of-origin labeling . “Iowa family farmers are in need of some good news, and today the Trump administration delivered just that. For years, I’ve sounded the alarm about anticompetitive practices in the meatpacking industry and the need to support domestic producers’ cattle markets. It’s good to see President Trump acting on policies that will directly benefit Iowans,” Grassley said . Background: Grassley introduced the Meat and Poultry Special Investigator Act to strengthen enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act in the meatpacking industry by adding a team of investigators with subpoena power within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Grassley is a cosponsor of the bipartisan New Markets for State-Inspected Meat and Poultry Act to allow meat and poultry products inspected by state Meat and Poultry Inspection programs to be sold across state lines. -30-
