Senator Coons statement on Supreme Court decision to end temporary protections for Haitians and Syrians
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) released the following statement after the Supreme Court declared the Trump administration could end Temporary Protected Status – a kind of immigration status that allows those fleeing crises to reside legally in the United States – for Syrians and Haitians: “This Supreme Court just handed away more of the judiciary’s power to the president for no good reason except that President Trump wants it. “Being a beacon for those seeking refuge from oppression and violence overseas defines one of the most important threads that runs through all of American history. “Temporary Protected Status brought a Haitian community to Delaware. In return, they have made our state stronger. They are our friends and neighbors and integral to our agricultural industry. That’s a quintessentially American story – one that President Trump, and now the Supreme Court, are trying to bring to an end.”
