Sen. Cruz Applauds Senate Passage of Resolution Honoring Texas A&M’s 150th Anniversary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) applauded Senate passage of the joint resolution he introduced with U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) commemorating the 150th anniversary of Texas A&M University. Texas A&M formally opened its doors on October 4, 1876, as the state’s first public institution of higher education and now enrolls more than 81,000 students across its campuses. Sen. Cruz said, “Texas A&M has produced generations of Texan, American, and global leaders committed to the values of excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect, and selfless service. These young men and women received a life-changing education in Aggieland and went on to address significant challenges around the world. BACKGROUND: The Texas Legislature established the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in 1871, with formal opening ceremonies and the first day of classes on October 4, 1876. Texas A&M’s core values include excellence, integrity, leadership, loyalty, respect, and selfless service. Texas A&M has played a pivotal role in the American Dream by providing generations of students with access to a quality, life-changing education. As of the end of fall 2025, A&M has more than 81,000 enrolled students across all campuses, with 74,407 enrolled at College Station. The A&M system has 4,398 full-time faculty and offers more than 411 degrees. The Corps of Cadets also has 2,400 members. With $1.4 billion in annual research expenditures, Texas A&M ranks among the top research institutions in the nation.
