Figures Named Vice Ranking Member on Important Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee

February 12, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON – Democratic leadership has announced that Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) will serve as the Vice Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture. Figures will be the number two Democrat on the subcommittee that will be at the center of addressing key nutritional issues in the United States, including in Alabama, and defending funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that many District 2 residents rely on. “Access to nutritious food is essential for improving health outcomes, especially in our rural communities,” said Rep. Figures. “As Vice Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture, I am committed to defending SNAP benefits that many Alabama families rely on. Alabama has one of the highest poverty rates and among the worst health outcomes in the nation. We must invest in nutrition programs that support fresh, affordable food options and reduce diet-related diseases. Strengthening these programs will not only improve public health but also support our farmers and local economies.” As the Vice Ranking Member, Rep. Figures will work alongside fellow committee members to shape policies that support organic and foreign agriculture, as well as nutrition programs like SNAP. He will advocate for policies that address food insecurity, protecting the benefits under the Thrifty Food Plan to ensure a healthy diet for Alabamians. This will benefit rural communities across District 2 by addressing issues related to chronic diseases. Issues : Health
