DENVER, CO
– Following Tuesday’s election, the Colorado Senate Democrats secured a supermajority, bringing the caucus to 24 members.
“I’m so proud of what our caucus achieved last night and grateful for the Colorado voters who continue to place their trust in us,”
said President James Coleman, D-Denver.
“At a time when families are struggling with rising costs, Washington is sowing chaos and division, and too many people feel unheard, Colorado is showing what effective and responsible government looks like. With this newly elected team, we’ll keep working to tackle the cost of living crisis, invest in education, and build a state where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
Several caucus members successfully defended their seats across the state: Dylan Roberts, D-Frisco (SD-8), Tony Exum, D-Colorado Springs (SD-11), Janice Marchman, D-Loveland (SD-15), Katie Wallace, D-Longmont (SD-17), Adrienne Benavidez, D-Commerce City (SD-21), Kyle Mullica, D-Thornton (SD-24), William Lindstedt, D-Broomfield (SD-25), Tom Sullivan, D-Aurora (SD-27), Iman Jodeh, D-Aurora (SD-29), and Matt Ball, D-Denver (SD-31).
Current State Representatives Sheila Lieder, D-Littleton (SD-20), Monica Duran, D-Wheat Ridge (SD-22), and Emily Sirota, D-Denver (SD-32), won their races and will be joining the Senate.
The caucus also welcomed several members who will be new to the Legislature. Aaron Gutierrez, D-Pueblo, won in Senate District 3, assuming the seat from Senator Nick Hinrichsen who did not run for reelection. Chela Garcia Irlando, D-Denver, won the Senate District 34 race, assuming the seat from Senator Julie Gonzales who was term-limited. Kevin Leung, D-Highlands Ranch, succeeded in his bid for Douglas County’s Senate District 30, a former Republican stronghold.
Caucus leadership elections will take place tomorrow, Thursday November 5, and the legislative session will begin on January 11, 2027.
