Congressman Al Green Secures $900,000 in Federal Funding for Houston Fire Department’s New Mobile Stroke Unit Launch
October 16, 2026 Press Release ( Houston, Texas ) — On Monday, October 19, 2026, Congressman Al Green will join Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher , the City of Houston , the Houston Fire Department (HFD) , and Memorial Hermann for a press conference celebrating the launch of HFD’s new Mobile Stroke Unit (MSU) service. In 2022, Congressman Green secured $900,000 in federal funding to support the purchase of the new unit for the Houston Fire Department. Through a partnership with Memorial Hermann, the unit will expand access to lifesaving emergency stroke care and bring Houston closer to achieving comprehensive Mobile Stroke Unit coverage. “When someone has a stroke, every minute matters,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher . “Mobile Stroke Units (MSU) bring diagnosis and treatment directly to patients, and they work. Research that began here in Houston in 2014 found that for every 100 patients an MSU treats, 27 have less lasting disability, and 11 recover with no disability at all. The $900,000 I secured for the Houston Health Department’s Mobile Stroke Unit is already helping patients, and with this new Houston Fire Department unit, made possible by Congressman Al Green’s work, more Houstonians will get faster care when it counts. I am grateful to Mayor Whitmire and the City of Houston for their commitment to expanding this life-saving service across our city, and I will continue working to make innovative treatments like this more accessible to people across our community.” Congressman Al Green stated, “I am proud to have secured $900,000 in federal funding to help bring this life-saving initiative to fruition through our partnership with the City of Houston, the Houston Fire Department, and Memorial Hermann. This is more than an investment in emergency medical services; it is an investment in saving lives, preventing lifelong disabilities, and protecting the well-being of our communities. No person should suffer preventable, permanent disability because critical medical care could not reach them in time. We must continue to make health care a priority for all and ensure that federal resources serve the people who need them most.” Click here to watch the YouTube Live Stream of the press conference at 2:00 p.m. CT.
