Reed Statement on 5th Anniversary of Brutal January 6 Insurrection

WASHINGTON, DC –On the five-year anniversary of the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, during which a mob of Donald Trump’s supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol following Trump’s 2020 electoral defeat and injured over 140 heroic police officers, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) issued the following statement:
“January 6, 2021 was a dark day in U.S. history.
“When President Trump pardoned those who were convicted of planning and coordinating the brutal assault on law enforcement officers who were defending the U.S. Capitol that day, it was a gross miscarriage of justice. It was a corrupt move. And it cut against the key American value that we are a nation of laws.
“The American people are strong and our democratic institutions are resilient. Together, we will uphold the Constitution and defend our democracy from all threats, both foreign and domestic. It is up to each of us as citizens -- individually and collectively -- to ensure our unified democratic republic survives and thrives.”
