Summer Lee Statement on President Biden Declaring Equal Rights Amendment Law of the Land WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Summer Lee (PA-12) released the following statement in response to President Biden declaring the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) the law of the land: "For generations, women, LGBTQIA+ folks, and gender equity advocates have fought tirelessly to enshrine equal rights into our Constitution. Today's declaration by President Biden marks an important step in that ongoing struggle. The Equal Rights Amendment belongs to the people and movements who demanded that our nation live up to its promise of equality—not just in rhetoric, but in law. "This announcement is long overdue, but it's a critical acknowledgment of what's already true: the fight for gender equality is far from over. Declaring the ERA law of the land is just one piece of what must be a broader effort to close the gender pay gap, defend reproductive justice, combat gender-based violence, and ensure the rights of women and LGBTQIA+ people are protected and expanded. "The Archivist must now act swiftly to publish the ERA as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution, ensuring the will of the people is realized. I remain committed to working alongside advocates and organizers to make sure this moment isn't just symbolic but a real step toward justice and equity for all."
