SACRAMENTO, CA — Today, Representative Ami Bera, M.D. (CA-06) issued the following statement marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:
“Twenty-five years ago, our nation was forever changed by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
“Janine and I remember and mourn the thousands of innocent lives lost on that fateful day, and we hold their families and loved ones in our hearts. We also honor the extraordinary courage of the first responders who rushed toward danger and helped save countless lives.
“Amidst unimaginable grief in the days and weeks that followed, Americans came together to support one another. People lined up to donate blood, brought food and supplies to first responders and families, volunteered their time, and reached out to neighbors and strangers alike. In one of our nation’s darkest moments, we saw the very best of who we are as Americans.
“That spirit of unity and shared purpose is worth remembering. There is far more that unites us than divides us.
“We also have an enduring responsibility to care for those who put their lives on the line in the immediate aftermath of the attacks and in the years that followed. First responders and survivors continue to live with illnesses linked to toxic exposure at Ground Zero. Service members who answered our nation’s call in Iraq and Afghanistan also continue to face the lasting health effects of burn pits and other toxic exposures.
“We must continue to honor that service and sacrifice by making sure they receive the care and support they deserve.”
