Committee Democrats Take Action to Hold the President Accountable for His Effort to Dismantle the Department of Education

March 21, 2025 Press Release Lawmakers are demanding transparency—failure to act will force this crucial issue to the House floor for a vote. As originally released by the Committee on Education and Workforce, Democrats WASHINGTON – Led by House Education and Workforce Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-03), Committee Democrats are taking swift action to challenge President Trump’s executive order to dismantle the Department of Education (ED).  Committee Democrats introduced a Resolution of Inquiry (ROI) to demand transparency and information from the President and Secretary of Education regarding the Administration’s efforts to dismantle ED and its potential impact on students nationwide. The Resolution of Inquiry will request all documents related to the closure, including legal memoranda, emails, and communications concerning reductions in force, downsizing measures, and decisions that could affect ED’s ability to fulfill its responsibilities under critical education laws. If the Committee does not act within 14 legislative days.  Such a motion would allow the full House to vote on the matter, ensuring Congress does not let this overreach go unchecked. “Abolishing a federal agency requires an Act of Congress,” said Ranking Member Scott . “President Trump’s executive order has little regard for the irreparable harm it will cause to students, educators, our future workforce, and parents, who are already struggling.
