Rep. Sara Jacobs Leads Discharge Petition on the Right to Contraception Act

June 09, 2026 Rep. Sara Jacobs Leads Discharge Petition on the Right to Contraception Act Rep. Sara Jacobs (CA-51) joined Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07), Rep. Angie Craig (MN-02), and Rep. Nikema Williams (GA-05) in filing a discharge petition on the Right to Contraception Act. The legislation, which has been stalled in committee, would codify and strengthen the right to access and use contraception, which the Supreme Court first recognized in its Griswold v. Connecticut decision in 1965. Under House rules, once the discharge petition secures 218 signatures, it triggers a vote on the House floor. Rep. Sara Jacobs said: “As a young woman, contraception is a key part of my health care. I know what it means to have reliable, accessible contraception – whether it’s an IUD or Plan B. This isn’t abstract or hypothetical for me – and it’s not for millions of other Americans. Republicans have already come for abortion rights, and we know contraception is next on their chopping block. But we’re not going to wait for them to take it. That’s why we’re filing this discharge petition to try to force a vote, on the record, so every Member of Congress has to answer if they think women deserve access to basic health care.” Rep. Jacobs co-led the introduction of the Right to Contraception Act in 2022, after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and the constitutional right to abortion in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision. She has been working alongside House Democrats to codify this right since, consistently emphasizing the need for bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom. ### Print Email Share Tweet
