<h4><strong> Who was Jeffrey Epstein?</strong></h4><p><br />Jeffrey Epstein was a wealthy financier at the center of a sprawling, decades-long sex trafficking ring involving underage girls—some as young as <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.justice.gov%2fusao-sdny%2fpress-release%2ffile%2f1180481%2fdl%3f&redir_log=774228704525421" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">14 years old</a>. He amassed enormous wealth and influence by cultivating close ties with <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.pbs.org%2fnewshour%2fpolitics%2femails-reveal-epsteins-network-of-the-rich-and-powerful-despite-sex-offender-status&redir_log=370387609852855" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">powerful individuals</a> across politics, business, and entertainment.<br /><br />In 2008, Epstein <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.pbs.org%2fnewshour%2fshow%2fthe-completely-unprecedented-plea-deal-jeffrey-epstein-made-with-alex-acosta&redir_log=291988837199773" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">pled guilty</a> to soliciting prostitution from a minor. But he served just 13 months, thanks to a lenient plea deal brokered by Alex Acosta—then U.S. Attorney in Florida, later Trump’s Secretary of Labor. That deal not only gave Epstein a slap on the wrist but also, <strong>effectively shut down most federal investigations into him.</strong></p><p>Fast forward to 2019, during Trump’s first term: Epstein was arrested in New York on <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.justice.gov%2fusao-sdny%2fpr%2fjeffrey-epstein-charged-manhattan-federal-court-sex-trafficking-minors&redir_log=44537756843757" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">federal sex trafficking charges</a>. Prosecutors alleged that between 2002 and 2005, Epstein sexually abused and exploited dozens of underage girls. <strong>Many believe the true number of victims exceeds a thousand.</strong> <br /><br />One month later, <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.npr.org%2f2019%2f08%2f10%2f750113214%2fjeffrey-epstein-found-dead-early-saturday-morning&redir_log=672424709703612" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">Epstein was found dead in his jail cell.</a> His death was ruled a suicide—though <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.wired.com%2fstory%2fthe-fbis-jeffrey-epstein-prison-video-had-nearly-3-minutes-cut-out%2f&redir_log=493376196698660" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">three minutes are missing</a> from security footage from the night Epstein died, and some of the released video appears to have been <strong>edited by someone at the Department of Justice this year.</strong> <br /><br /><strong>Following Epstein’s death, federal investigators began examining his co-conspirators</strong>—those who may have helped or participated in these horrific crimes. In 2022, under the Biden administration, Ghislaine Maxwell—Epstein’s close associate—was <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.justice.gov%2fusao-sdny%2fpr%2fghislaine-maxwell-sentenced-20-years-prison-conspiring-jeffrey-epstein-sexually-abuse&redir_log=349986954155862" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">sentenced to 20 years</a> in prison for five counts related to sex trafficking of minors. But momentum kept building.</p><p>Facing an embarrassing defeat, Trump reversed course and <a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2ftruthsocial.com%2f%40realDonaldTrump%2f115562626931599548&redir_log=624461390913362" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">announced support for the vote</a>—just hours before the House passed the bill overwhelmingly, followed by unanimous consent in the Senate.</p> </div>

<h4><strong>What’s Next</strong></h4><p>Even with the legislation likely to become law, we must remain vigilant.</p><p>Speaker Johnson—who voted for the bill—<a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fx.com%2fatrupar%2fstatus%2f1990806531420401673%3fs%3d20&redir_log=330754167307312" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank">continued to criticize it.</a> And while the President is expected to sign it, let’s not forget, <strong>President Trump could have released these files at any time, on his own without any action from Congress. But he chose not to.</strong></p><p>The bill includes a loophole that allows some records to be withheld if they’re part of an “ongoing investigation.” Many fear, I among them, that<a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fx.com%2fmkraju%2fstatus%2f1990792475238355062%3fs%3d20&redir_log=110274245518306" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank"> Trump will exploit this provision</a> to prevent information he considers politically damaging, from coming to light. <strong>In fact, he has already publicly ordered an investigation into </strong><a href="https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=SC06JC&crop=15576QQQ13618122QQQ2988530QQQ7586422&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww.nbcnews.com%2fpolitics%2ftrump-administration%2ftrump-epstein-bondi-clinton-larry-summers-reid-hoffman-jpmorgan-chase-rcna243971&redir_log=589079280181927" rel="noopener external noreferrer" target="_blank"><strong>Democrats only.</strong></a></p> </div>
