ICYMI: Sen. Schiff Tours CBP Facility at San Francisco International Airport in Oversight Visit Seeking Answers on Rights and Treatment of Detainees
San Francisco, CA – Today, U.S. Senator Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, conducted an oversight visit of the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) facility at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to learn firsthand about the facility’s conditions amid reports that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been using it as a holding area to detain immigrants, including lawful permanent residents, for several days before transferring them to ICE facilities. “For today’s visit, I had three areas of concern. What was their access to family, and their ability to tell their loved ones what’s happened to them? What was their access to medical treatment, and how do we determine whether they’re getting what they need? And finally, what was their access to counsel? People are at the whim of what CBP is doing, and they have no recourse, and families are terrified. We got some answers today, but I remain concerned about the practices at this facility. I’ll continue conducting oversight of the administration’s unlawful immigration policies,” said Senator Schiff about his visit. Download footage from the entrance to the facility here . Background : Schiff has continued to call out and conduct oversight of the Trump administration’s unlawful and cruel immigration policies. In March, Schiff led an oversight inquiry into the alarming data sharing by TSA and ICE relating to the arrest and removal of a mother and her minor child at SFO. In January 2026, Senator Schiff conducted a similar oversight visit to the ICE facility in California City, the largest immigration detention center in California, alongside U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.). In September 2026, Schiff introduced the Fairness to Freedom Act of 2026 , legislation to guarantee the right to legal representation for all individuals facing deportation or any legal immigration proceeding if they are unable to afford it. ###
