Figures Statement Condemning Government Shutdown

October 1, 2025 Press Release WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02) made the following statement condemning the government shutdown: “Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House. This shutdown is the result of their failure to lead and negotiate in a bipartisan manner to fund the government. I couldn’t support the House Republicans’ temporary solution to fund the government because it does nothing to save our rural hospitals; it does nothing to ensure that money directed by Congress to be spent is actually spent how Congress directed it; and it does nothing to roll back arguably the largest tax hike ever imposed on the American people due to the tariffs which are driving up costs on goods for all Americans.  Now, families in Alabama and across the country are at risk of losing their healthcare, and healthcare costs for millions of people will skyrocket if the Affordable Care Act premium subsidies are allowed to expire. More hospitals are at risk of closing in our rural communities, and costs for everyday people keep rising. Our families and neighbors deserve better than this chaos. Republicans should join Democrats to negotiate in good faith to do what’s best for Alabama and America." Issues : Congress
