The presidential pardon power is out of control on both sides of the aisle, and I think it should end. There are literally people who are pardon brokers who are being paid $300,000 to get close to Trump and to buy a pardon. Ban the presidential pardon.

This follows a string of similar letters, many containing unknown powdery substances, being sent to elected officials across the U.S. I thank law enforcement for their hard work to keep us all safe.

Tonight, we received confirmation that a suspicious letter was intercepted en route to our office in Detroit. Everyone is safe, and the matter is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the FBI.

No one should have to fear for their safety in their house of worship. This weekend, police thwarted an attempt to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. The would-be attacker was driven by hatred of Indian Americans and a belief in white supremacy.

A number of universities and think tanks said, “We’re sorry, but we just can’t take the risk. We don’t wanna draw that kind of attention to ourselves.” And I thought, that’s a problem.

And the irony was not lost on me that as I was there learning about how they are coming out of 16 years of authoritarianism, in my own country I can’t find a venue that’s brave enough to host me in talking about coming out of authoritarianism.

I know this firsthand. The President called for me to be investigated, arrested, and hanged for sedition after I made a 90-second video. So I feel like I’ve earned a little bit of street cred on the authoritarian playbook Trump and his team are employing.

What is the authoritarian playbook? It is really simple: You get into power on an issue of common concern. Once you win, you accumulate power, enrich yourself, your family, and your closest allies, and go after anyone who disagrees with you.

Not going to let that happen: we have bipartisan legislation to ban these vehicles from the U.S. — especially from our military bases at home and abroad — that Congress should pass and send to the President’s desk to be signed. Our national security is on the line.

This is a real cautionary tale for America. Chinese vehicles are CCP spies on wheels. They can connect to the internet, take photos of our servicemembers and their children, collect images of our military bases, and record American military secrets — and send all of that to China.

When the Norwegian Armed Forces used Chinese cars during military exercises, the cars recorded soldiers, travel routes, and even the access codes to open up the gates of military facilities. And all of that data can be sent right back to Beijing.

Second, we need accountability, particularly on corruption, the abuse of taxpayer dollars and the weaponization of government. And third, we need to Trump-proof the government.

I actually think governing effectively is a three-legged stool. First, we need an agenda that’s gonna actually help real people. Take some big economic swings—declare a housing emergency, create a public insurance plan, and build a tax code that reflects reality.
