The president can post about me. He can make fun of me all he wants. I barricaded myself in my office on January 6th, the last time he tried to overturn an election. And earlier this year, he tried to criminally indict me for a 90-second video. The intimidation is the point.

This is all part of a well-worn authoritarian playbook. As a former CIA officer, I've seen this movie play out overseas. It usually ends up with the leader creating a justification to send uniformed military or federal law enforcement to the polls in the 11th hour.

4⃣ He also said in the State of the Union that if his side doesn't win in November, the elections were rigged. 5⃣ He's obsessively pushed the Save America Act, which would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.

1⃣ He kicked off the redistricting wars to protect his Republican majorities. 2⃣ He gutted the Voting Rights Act from the 1960s. 3⃣ He's suing 30 states for their voter rolls, including the state of Michigan.

This is all part of the president's efforts to lay down a storyline ahead of the November elections so that if his party loses, he can wrongly claim fraud. So, let's review the bidding on what the president has done just in the past six or seven months to create this narrative.

First and foremost, voting and our democracy are safe. Voting by mail is safe. There are some states, like Utah, that vote 90% by mail. But this is part of a bigger story of President Trump’s obsession with disinformation and misinformation about our elections because he fears he's going to lose.

The uniformed military should not be deployed to interfere in our elections by any President. Military leaders should be able to state that easily on that – on the record. It’s critical for our democracy that they uphold the law.

The President has made it clear through speeches, statements, official guidance, and continued legal action that he is seeking to use all possible tools to interfere with the midterms – including publicly lamenting that he did not send Federal forces to the polls in 2020.

Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has once again made violent, dehumanizing comments about innocent civilians in Gaza. It is abhorrent and a shameful part of the Netanyahu government.

For a Jewish state to support such violence, given the history of Jewish people fleeing similar terror just a few generations ago, is reprehensible. And Congress should use all the tools we have to demand basic accountability.

The cycle of settler expansion and violence with no consequences must end. And responsibility falls squarely with Prime Minister Netanyahu and his government, who either turn a blind eye or openly support this kind of violence.

There have been hundreds of settler attacks this year in the West Bank, resulting in death and injuries -- including awful incidents this past weekend. Settlers have killed civilians, surrounded homes, burned down villages and mosques, and kept innocent civilians from food and water.

As one constitutional scholar put it, “If a president is truly determined to make himself a dictator, the question at the end of the day is whether the military and other force-deploying agencies of the Federal government are willing to go along.”

The uniformed military shouldn't be deployed to interfere in our elections. Period. The nonpartisan tradition of military service and the constitutional guardrails that prevent our military from becoming a domestic police force for one political party are essential to maintaining our democracy.
