Tillis, Senate Republican Colleagues Introduce Laken Riley Act in 119th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Senator Thom Tillis and his colleagues introduced theLaken Riley Act, legislation which would require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to arrest illegal immigrants who commit theft, burglary, larceny, or shoplifting offenses and would mandate that these immigrants are detained until they are removed from the United States so they cannot reoffend and commit further crimes.
This legislation would also ensure states have standing to bring civil actions against federal officials who refuse to enforce immigration law or who violate the law.
“Laken Riley was murdered in cold blood because an illegal immigrant, who previously committed a crime, wasn’t deported due to President Biden’s disastrous border policies,”said Senator Tillis.“Illegal immigrants who commit a serious crime should be deported immediately. This commonsense legislation ensures that ICE detains and ultimately deports criminal illegal immigrants rather than let them continue to threaten our communities.”
