Senator Andy Kim Statement Condemning Trump’s Overreach of Power and Attack on Home Rule in Washington D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C.–Today,Senator Andy Kim (D-NJ),Ranking Member of the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee’s Subcommittee with oversight over the municipal affairs of the District of Columbia, released the following statement on President Trump’s Executive Orders to federalize Washington D.C.’s police force and deploy the national guard in the nation’s capital:
“This is Donald Trump gaslighting the American people so he can seize more power; it will do nothing to make Americans safer. Federalizing the DC Metropolitan Police Department and deploying National Guard and FBI agents represents extraordinary overreach and government waste by President Trump. His threats to deploy more U.S. military to American cities is yet another attempt to strike fear into Americans all for his political gain. If Trump wants to help, he should reimburse the DC Metro police for their full costs for Trump’s military parade and inauguration, and press Congress to reinstate the full funding to DC that Speaker Johnson and Congressional Republicans removed earlier this year that is straining our national capital’s budget, including the police.”
