Washington, DC – U.S. Representative Lou Correa (CA-46) condemned a new Department of Justice (DOJ) legal opinion issued today that outlines a path for the federal government to strip funding from states that don’t help carry out the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda. “This is a blatant attempt to turn every state government in the country into an arm of ICE,” Correa said . “Families apply for food assistance and disability benefits because they need help feeding their kids and caring for their parents. Now this administration wants to hold those programs hostage to advance its violent and inhumane deportation agenda that tears communities apart.” “My team and I are looking into the legality of this interpretation. This administration has its own unique way of interpreting the law. California already sends the federal government more than $80 billion a year in federal taxes than we get back. Clearly, this administration wants more from us,” Correa concluded . The DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel adopted a new interpretation that says when states accept federal funding to help assist low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities, all state agencies have to report people’s immigration status to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This includes widely used programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The opinion significantly broadens who must comply.
