The legislation responds to growing concerns over the Chinese Communist Party’s role in exploitative mining practices tied to the global supply chain for critical minerals, including cobalt, gold, and iron. “The United States cannot turn a blind eye while the Chinese Communist Party and its affiliated entities profit from forced labor, child labor, and environmental devastation,” said Congressman Max Miller. “This bill is about accountability, transparency, and ensuring American companies and consumers are not unknowingly supporting abusive mining operations abroad.” “When America steps back, China steps forward, and nowhere is that more evident than in Africa. From labor abuses to environmental harm, vulnerable communities have been left worse off because of the unfair practices of the Chinese Communist Party,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz. “It’s not right, and the United States cannot be complicit in it. I’m proud to work with Rep. Miller on this important legislation to shine a light on these horrific practices and ensure accountability where it’s long overdue. We cannot let exploitation define the global market. It’s time we hold these bad actors accountable and bring transparency back to our supply chains.” “Nowhere are the costs of China’s mining practices more evident than in sub-Saharan Africa. From environmental degradation to labor abuses, Chinese firms have too often left communities worse off,” said Rep. Young Kim (CA-40), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific. “I commend Rep. Miller for leading the effort to shine a light on these practices and hold bad actors accountable.” Bill text available here . One-pager here .
