Schmitt Helps Secure $42 Million for I-70 Improvements

U.S. SENATE — Today, U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt announced that following his push, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has been awarded $42,101,350 through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highways Projects (INFRA) Grant Program for improvements to Interstate 70 near St. Louis Lambert International Airport. The award will be used to implement corridor & interchange improvements along I-70 from Cypress Road (east of US 67) to the upcoming Natural Bridge interchange (west of I-170). This will include interchange improvements at the I-70/Cypress, I-70/Airflight, and I-70/Natural Bridge intersections “Interstate 70 is one of the most important transportation arteries in Missouri, connecting families, businesses, freight, and travelers throughout the St. Louis region and beyond. This $42 million helps to complement the broader I-70 widening project, with a targeted investment to make a critical stretch of I-70 safer and more efficient while improving access to Lambert Airport,” said Senator Schmitt. “I was proud to support MoDOT’s application and work with Secretary Duffy and the Department of Transportation to bring these resources home to Missouri. As St. Louis makes major investments in the future of Lambert Airport, we also need the infrastructure surrounding it to be ready for that growth.” “America’s infrastructure is rated a C. Instead of wasting federal dollars on trains to nowhere, President Trump is investing in desperately-needed infrastructure upgrades that will enhance the way people and projects move,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “Senator Schmitt’s advocacy was critical in delivering the $42 million needed to make corridor and interchange improvements along I-70, which will support traffic around St. Louis Lambert International Airport. This Administration is committed to making our supply chains resilient and our partners in Congress make that possible.” “Lambert International Airport is a vital transportation hub for St. Louis, the state and the entire region,” said MoDOT Director Ed Hassinger. “This grant allows for much needed improvements to I-70, making access to the airport easier and more efficient. This is another example of how federal, state and local partners can come together to deliver projects for Missourians. We appreciate Senator Schmitt’s commitment to this important project, and we look forward to delivering it for our customers.” In July, Senator Schmitt wrote Secretary Duffy in support of MoDOT’s INFRA application, noting that the proposed improvements would strengthen the St. Louis region’s connections to national air and roadway commerce while improving traffic flow along the corridor. ###
