Rep. Chu's Statement on Allegations of Chinese Spying Targeting Taiwan's President's Family in the United States
October 15, 2026 Press Release PASADENA, CA - Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) released the following statement in response to the FBI's October 4th arrest of an individual accused of spying on the son of Taiwan's President, Lai Ching-te, in Seattle, Washington, at the direction of the Chinese government. "I am deeply troubled by allegations that the Chinese government conducted a spying operation here in the United States targeting the son and family of President Lai Ching-te. Such behavior is clearly intended to intimidate not just President Lai's family, but all Taiwanese Americans whose political views are opposed by the Chinese government. This is why I am proud to cosponsor H.R. 4829, the Transnational Repression Policy Act, in Congress. This legislation would establish clear U.S. policy to protect people from foreign government harassment, hold perpetrators accountable, and require the State Department to lead a comprehensive government strategy to counter transnational repression."
