The legislation ensures that taxpayer-backed SBA loans are reserved for U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and legal immigrants, not individuals who entered the country illegally. “American taxpayers shouldn’t be footing the bill for illegal immigrants to start businesses,” said Congressman Harrigan. “Small business owners across this country are doing things the right way and still struggling to access capital. The idea that someone here illegally could cut the line and get federal dollars is an insult. This bill restores fairness and defends the integrity of our system.” The legislation amends existing law to make clear that illegal immigrants are ineligible for any SBA assistance, including disaster loans and economic relief programs.
