Larson Statement on the Fifth Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection at the United States Capitol

January 6, 2026 Press Release Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. John B. Larson (CT-01) released the following statement on the fifth anniversary of the January 6 th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, resulting in the death of five police officers and injuring more than 140 others. “It’s been five years since the brutal attack on our democracy and the freedoms we hold dear,” said Larson . “From the window in my office, I watched the mob overtake our Capitol. Today, we remember the five police officers who died as a result of this violence. Our hearts are with their families, and we pledge to honor their memory today and every day. If you don’t reflect on history, it becomes forgotten, and while that may be the hope of President Trump and Speaker Johnson, I will never forget the truth and neither will the American people.” On his first day in office, President Trump pardoned the January 6 th insurrectionists , including leaders of white supremacist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. He later fired the federal prosecutors at the Department of Justice who investigated the insurrection. Additionally, under Speaker Johnson, the House of Representatives continues to refuse to display a plaque honoring the law enforcement officers who responded to January 6th.
